CRAZY Weekend!!!

I have been watching and listening to lots of sports talk, and the question everyone seems to be asking is, "What does this CRAZY weekend full of upsets mean to college football and the BCS?"

Here is a recap of the weekend in college football:
  (1) LSU beat Ole Miss to remain undefeated - remain number 1
  (2) Oklahoma State lost to Iowa State for first loss of season - drop to number 4
  (3) Alabama easily beat Georgia Southern - rise to number 2
  (4) Oregon lost to USC for second loss of season - drop to number 10
  (5) Oklahoma lost to Baylor for second loss of season - drop to number 9
  (6) Arkansas beat Mississippi State - rise to number 3
  (7) Clemson lost to N.C. State - drop to number 17
  (8) Virginia Tech beat North Carolina - rise to number 5
  (9) Stanford beat California - rise to number 6
(10) Boise State beat San Diego State - rise to number 7
(11) Houston beat SMU to remain undefeated - rise to number 8
* Second time in BCS history three of top five teams lost
** First time in BCS history top three teams have all been from same conference

I think Alabama is in a better place to go to the National Championship than LSU because they only have to win one game, and LSU will have to win both against Arkansas and Georgia in the SEC Championship.

Also, all Oklahoma State needs to go to the National Championship is an Auburn upset over Alabama and an LSU win against Arkansas, but they have to beat the underrated Oklahoma Sooners on December 3rd.

What we realize now is that if Boise State had beaten TCU, they would have been number 2 in the BCS rankings now and on the path of going to the National Championship. Boise State can't say they were cheated out of the National Championship now because they probably would have gotten their chance.

This will be the year that defines why the BCS needs a playoff system. I don't like the idea of a team that doesn't play in their conference championship going to the National Championship. I would be fine if they earned it through beating teams that won their conference in the playoffs though. All of these one and two loss teams could be in the playoffs. Like the current BCS system, all the teams that win their conference championships would make the playoffs with the BCS rankings deciding the seedings. Then, all those teams like Alabama and Arkansas who are great teams and deserve a reward but don't win their conference championships would be ranked below those who won their championship. This means that even those teams like Boise State, TCU, and Houston who have a great record but don't play the competition that SEC school play get a chance at the National Championship.

Midnight Madness

Friday night was Midnight Madness, the first night of college basketball practice. The beginning of a new season means predictions. My Final Four picks are North Carolina, Kentucky, Ohio State and Syracuse. I think Vanderbilt is a great team and has a chance to make it to the Final Four, but they never play very well in the NCAA Tournament. I think the Wooden Award will go to Harrison Barnes of North Carolina. This will be a great season, and it will be very fun to watch!

College Football Preview: SEC

This year the SEC is going to be a very competitive conference. In the AP Poll Preseason Top 25, they are repersented by 7 teams: Alabama (2), LSU (4), South Carolina (12), Arkansas (14), Mississippi State (20), Georgia (22) and Florida (23). I think once again the National Champion will come from the SEC. I think the SEC Championship game will be between Alabama and South Carolina. The only other team that could win the East Division would be Florida, but I doubt they will win the East with a first time head coach, Will Muschamp. The West Division will be very competitive. LSU will compete with Alabama for the West title, but they will face a tough matchup early in the season against the Oregon Ducks. I do think LSU will win that game even though Oregon is ranked higher. I think Oregon goes undefeated every year because they play a weaker schedule than all the SEC teams. If a SEC team moved to the PAC 12,  they would go undefeated almost every year. Therefore, LSU will win based on the experience gained from playing a much harder schedule than Oregon.

BPA 11U World Series

This summer I participated in travel baseball. It was my first experience playing a travel sport, and it is one I will always remember. Our team was very good, and we could always compete with the best teams. The last tournament we played was the BPA World Series in Owensboro, Kentucky. To qualify for this elite tournament, your team had to have played in your state’s tournament and to have enough BPA points.

On the first day of the tournament there were no games, but there was an opening ceremony for all of the teams. At the opening ceremony, all of the teams were lined up outside of the gym before each team walked into the gym. As we entered the gym I was so excited. I felt like a pro athlete, the star of night, because you could see yourself on the big screen, and everyone was cheering for you. We sat down and listened to a few people speak; then it was over. After the ceremony we went back to the hotel.

The next morning we had a game against the Indiana Express at 11. We won that game and were done for the day with games. That night we came back to the ballpark for the skills competitions and pin trading. Most teams at the World Series brought a pin to trade with other teams. Over the course of the weekend I collected 15 pins from other teams. For my team, The Middle TN Titans, I was the catcher for “Around the Horn.” Our team was quick, very quick, but not quick enough. I had so many feelings in my body after competing. I was upset we hadn’t won but happy we got third out of twenty-nine teams. Next, I went to go watch my teammates in the speed contest. Our team got second in that competition. After that, I was so excited to go watch my other teammates in the “Homerun Derby” that I forgot my glove. At that moment, I was worried and panicked. Luckily, one of my teammates’ moms picked it up and returned it to me. At the “Homerun Derby” our team was represented by two players. Neither one of them hit a homerun. After the Derby our night was over.

On Friday we had a game at 9 against the Kentucky BlueSox. We woke up early and won the game. We played again at 3 against the PV Legends, a good ballclub. Our bats got off to an early start, and we beat one of the top teams in the tournament. After that, our day was over. No night activities. Nothing. We could just relax the rest of the day.

With the win over the Legends, we were guaranteed only one game on Saturday at 7 pm against Baseball Factory, another good team. On our off day we played around in the hotel and had a team video session of the previous day’s games. As a team we went to Subway to eat before heading to the ballpark. Once again, our bats got off to a great start and led us to a victory. I even had friends in a whole other state getting updates on our game. All of my mom’s texts were about my game. Close to the end of our game it began to get tight. We put in our best pitcher to finish off the game. He did his job and got us out of a jam. The win put us into the winner’s bracket finals.

With the win over Baseball Factory we were set to play the West Michigan Broncos at 9 am. If we won this game, we would be in the championship. Both teams went into the game undefeated, and both teams deserved to be here. We got down early and never really fought back, going on to lose this game. However, we were not out of the tournament yet! We would play the Southern Indiana Spikes, and we were not ready to go home yet. This game was an up and down battle for us. We got down early, got a terrible call, and two coaches got ejected from the game. This sparked us to come back and win on a walkoff hit. The whole game was an up and down battle. With that win we made it back to the championship game. We would play our third straight game of the day against a well rested West Michigan Broncos. They once again got ahead early. By then I was ready to go home. I got up to bat with two outs in the last inning. I grounded out to shortstop becoming the last batter of the World Series. After the game and a long day our team went over to the trophy ceremony.

It didn’t really hit me until we were almost home that we had gotten second in the world. We were the second best team in the world! That is unbelievable. Our coach called me up to get my trophy. I took the trophy and posed for a picture with him. On our way home, most of the time I was only half listening to my dad because I was in shock of how well our team did. SECOND IN THE WORLD!!!

I know second isn’t the best, but it’s better than third. I know our team isn’t the best in the country, but we were second. I’m so proud of these boys. That winter day I showed up at BGA to tryout, I never would have thought we would have been second in the world. But there’s still room for improvement next year!!!

NBA Finals

Last night the Mavs wrapped up the NBA Finals. They beat the Miami Heat 105-95 in Game 6. This is the Mavs first NBA Championship. Congrats Dallas Mavs.

Back to Omaha

Sorry I haven't posted in so long. I've been caught up with baseball and school since I last posted. Any way how bout them Tarheels. Going back to the College World Series. Last night they beat Stanford 7-5 after a three and a half hour rain delay. Also the hometown Dores beat Oregon State to advance to Omaha. The Heels and Dores will face each other in the first game of the CWS.

NCAA Tournament Seeding Preview (Seeds 1-6)

This year the NCAA Tournament format has changed. There will be 68 teams instead of 64, and there will be 4 teams fighting for the last spot in the bracket in the First Four round. But the seeding is still the same. Here are my seeds.

1. Kansas, Pittsburgh, Ohio State, Texas
2. Duke, San Diego State, Notre Dame, Georgetown
3. BYU, Purdue, Connecticut, Wisconsin
4. Villanova, Syracuse, Louisville, Arizona
5. North Carolina, Vanderbilt, Florida, Missouri
6. Kentucky, Utah State, Texas A&M, St. John's

Larry Drew II Transferring

The word came out last night. Larry Drew II is transferring from North Carolina. Roy Williams has said that he has not talked with Larry, but has talked with his father, Larry Drew, a coach for the Atlanta Hawks. Larry will not play tomorrow against Florida State in Chapel Hill. This comes at an odd time. Carolina is really hot, winning their last four games, and they play Duke on Wednesday. My question is "Why would you leave the team you won a National Championship with?" I feel sure that this all happened because of his dad. I bet he wanted him to start somewhere. I just wonder, why now. Let him finish the year, then transfer. If Larry transfers to another Division 1 school, he will have to sit out one year. If I were him, I would have stayed until the year's end, then go to the NBA. I feel sure his dad would draft him. But the Tarheels are going to have to get over this, and quickly because they play a really tough Florida State team tomorrow.

VA Tech Review/GA Tech Preview

Thursday night the Tarheels came back to beat VA Tech 64-61. They trailed 31-24 at the half. Virginia Tech's Malcom Delaney was 7-12 from behind the arch. John Henson had many key blocks that helped the Heels come back to win. This team has grit. Grit is when you are tough and never give up. Last year's team didn't have grit because they would have given up when they were down big like the Heels were Thursday.

The Heels look to win their 6th straight win tonight when they visit Georiga Tech in Atlanta. They should win tonight vs. the 6-7 Yellow Jackets. My family, and my friend Badger Warner are going to the game and look forward to watching a fun basketball game.
