Rivalries

Rivalry. The dictionary definition is "competition for the same objective or for superiority in the same field." My definition would be a game that two teams who don't like each other are playing. There are many rivalries in college athletics like UNC/Duke, Ohio State/Michigan, Alabama/Auburn, USC/UCLA,Texas/Oklahoma. Every team has a rival. It can be an in-state rivalry in which 2 teams from the same state are playing. Some rivalries just started because a coach went to the other school or just that they played a close game one year. In most rivalries the teams are evenly matched which makes the matchups more interesting to watch. Some families are divided. My mom's friend's family is split in the UNC/Duke rivalry. Her friend went to UNC while her sister went to Duke which makes the games more exciting. UNC and Duke are big rivals in basketball and get much attention while in football it is not big and doesn't get much attention. The Ohio State/Michigan rivalry is huge in football but not in basketball. I wonder why that happens. Please comment why you think this happens and which rivalry you care the most about.

  1. I think it happens because North Carolina and Duke are not as good in football as they are in basketball. Also Ohio State and Michigan are not as good in basketball as they are in football. I think the UNC/Duke rivalry matters most to me because my mom went to UNC.

  2. I enjoy reading your posts. In terms of rivalry, Texas A&M and the university of texas have always had a huge rivalry. Texas A&M's fight song even talks about "sawing varsity's horns off," which is a direct reference to ut. However, I think the word 'hate' is very strong here, and can be disputed. I had the honor of attending the A&M/texas game right after the A&M bonfire collapsed. The Longhorns showed such class and compassion toward A&M, and even gave the band a standing ovation - all in the face of a huge rivalry. This is how I like to think of rivalries; spirited competition between neighboring teams in order to foster spirit and pride.

Also, since most rivalries are neighboring, many of the players are friends from high school and have played together at some point. To the players, it's more about the game and not about the people playing.

Well done with the blog posts. :)
